My husband had a tooth pulled about a week ago and he thinks he may have dry socket but we want to know what to look for..

there really isn't anything to look for. all it means is that the clot was dislodged. if it hurts like hell then chances are it is a dry socket.
Not many pictures b/c they all look different. Basically, it hurts much worse than it ever did before. Extremely painful call the dentist they should be able to prescribe an antibiotic for him b/c that is what he needs. Also, he will need an appointment they usually pack the hole w/ absorbable material soaked in clove oil. You can also buy clove oil at the health food store and put some drops in the hole but it will burn like hell. For some reason sometimes the clot fails to form. The clot is what heals/starts the healing process. No clot, no healing so infection sets in and thus the extreme pain.
There isn't anything to look for. Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that fills the empty space (where the tooth once was in the bone) becomes dislodged and healing occurs only at the surface. That's to say, the gum heals but not the bone under it. The tooth socket is left empty. That's why if you were to look into his mouth, it would appear fairly normal. Dry socket is a very painful situation. I can be treated with cloves but my best recommendation would be to go back to see the dentist who originally pulled the tooth. He/she will treat the site with a clove pack and healing will occur quickly and your husband will be pain free once again. The sooner this is addressed the sooner your husband will feel better. A dry socket is when the blood clot is no longer in the hole where the tooth was and it is very painful.So it would be sunk in kinda.
He'll be in so much pain from a dry socket...He won't care what it looks like..Have him see his dentist and they can put a eugenol packing in the socket, and with some pain killers...he'll feel much better.Make sure he does not drink from a straw or do any sort of spitting..and NO smoking
